Minister Asks Medical Devices Cos To Utilize ‘Make in India’ Initiative To Save Rs. 40,000 To Rs. 50,000 Crore On Imports

Union minister for tourism, G Kishan Reddy has called upon the medical devices manufacturers to utilize the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Central government and take up new research to develop and manufacture innovative and highly advanced medical device technologies within India and avoid spending huge money on imports of medical devices equipments which is causing heavy burden on the Indian economy.

Inaugurating the launch of Jaitra Devices and Systems, a medical devices manufacturing company in Hyderabad, Reddy observed that every year Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000 crore are being spent on importing medical devices into the country. He urged investors and new startups to utilize the various incentives being provided by the central government under ‘Make in India’ initiative and make India self sufficient of advanced medical devices and healthcare equipments.

“The Central government is encouraging different manufacturing sector firms to produce high quality and most advanced technologically innovative products used in healthcare under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. As part of this policy initiative, the Central government has also introduced ‘Production linked incentive scheme’ which is aimed at encouraging domestic production in a big way,” said Kishan Reddy.

Referring to recent shortfalls during the pandemic with regard to shortage of various medical devices and equipments like PPE kits, ventilators, oxygen concentrators and others which were in huge demand by the Indian healthcare system and customers in India, he said because of which India got to depend on other countries to meet the same.

The Union minister opined that the Covid-19 pandemic has become an eye opener and said that despite facing tough time during the pandemic, India’s intelligence, domestic manufacturing capability and high end research institutions made it possible for the country to overcome the shortfalls in healthcare, pharma and biotechnology industry. In just a short span of time and today India has become a global supplier of Covid medicines, vaccines and medical devices like PPE kits, ventilators and various other anti-Covid-19 devices like bipolar air disinfectants and purifiers to the world.

While appreciating the role of scientists in pharma, biotechnology and various other research sectors and the role of doctors and nurses and other paramedical staff in the country, the Union minister said that it is because of the collective efforts of all these talented people today India has overcome the deadly pandemic and is now treading a path of growth by vaccinating over 100 crore vaccine doses to its people, which is a remarkable achievement for the country.
