Speaker’s Introduction

Born on 19th June, 1962, Mr. Rajiv Nath entered his family business i.e. Hindustan Syringes & Medical Devices Ltd. (HMD) soon after he finished his college in 1984. But inspite of joining the family business, Mr. Nath preferred to start from the scratch & in the initial years, started his career from the shop floor of HMD to have first hand experience of all the ground realities & learning basic production techniques of Medical Devices Industry.

This experience, which Mr. Nath gained in his initial years has helped him or should we say has been instrumental in making HMD “India’s leading player in Syringes & Needle industry” under the able leadership of Mr. Rajiv Nath. The last 17 years have witnessed HMD growing by leaps & bounds under the direction of the father son duo. Today, with the capacity of manufacturing 2 billion Disposable syringes & needles per annum, which is being further enhanced to 2.5 billion units per annum, HMD; Dispovan Brand is the undisputed market leader in India & commands over 65% market share. During this period only, the company’s turnover has grown from a mere Rs. 2 crores to over Rs. 200 crores in the year 2004, an highly impressive growth rate of over 100 times in 20 years.

But, the road to success is not so smooth and challenged by competitors. It took years of hard work, innovation & thoughtful ideas in taking the company so high. Innovation & Marketing are the core competence of Rajiv Nath. Operating in an industry, where there was no ‘Brand Consciousness’ at the end-consumer level, Rajiv Nath is the one who dared to challenge the rules of the market & wrote his own script with respect to syringe design, packaging and presentation. He created a niche for his disposable syringe “DISPOVAN” & today is the most popular or to be precise, the only popular brand in Syringe market in India. So strong is the brand name that even non medical consumers now ask for ‘DISPOVAN’ rather than a ‘Syringe’.

No education background in the medical industry, has never been a hindrance for Rajiv Nath to accumulate Knowledge & innovate. The feeling of responsibility towards the medical industry & to deliver affordable low cost medical devices to the society in general has always inspired Rajiv Nath to go deeper into this industry. That is why he always gave major importance on Engineering & Development in his company. The efforts yielded results when recently he introduced India’s first “AUTO-DISABLE” Syringes by the name “KOJAK SELINGE” in the international market. Kojak Selinge, which can not be re-used, is the only answer to the problem of injection related infections & diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C.

For Rajiv Nath, innovation is a habit. He has other major ambitious expansion plans for HMD to make it one of the Top 5 company worldwide for each of its’ product families. A target of Rs. 250 crores’s turnover for the current financial year & investment plans of another Rs. 30 crores in expansion programmes in next 6 months alone do give a preview of what he has in store for HMD.
