Bonding Medical Plastics

3) Plasticized PVC

The heavily plasticized PVC poses unique challenges for bonding. The initial adhesion can be disturbed by the large amounts of free plasticizer. It is advisable to test heat aged bonded parts as this accelerates the migration of plasticizer to the bond and it helps to evaluate long term adhesion. The light curing and polyurethane adhesives have been formulated to address this challenge.

4) Stress cracking of Plastics

Stress cracking is another area which has to be kept in mind before a manufacturer uses any method to join. Stress cracking occurs primarily because the monomer or the solvent attack the polymer surface and allow the chemicals to penetrate through and generate the internal stresses which could cause stress cracking. Some of the crystalline thermoplastics like ABS , polypropylene, Polycarbonate, Polystyrene , SAN, PPO, are susceptible to stress cracking.
