Device
used for the oxygenation of blood during open heart
surgery. First product developed by the Institute
under total industrial sponsorship |
In
2001, the Institute and its Industrial partner M/s.
TTK Healthcare Ltd, Chennai received the prestigious
National Technology Award of the Govt. of India for
successful development and commercialisation of the
artificial heart valve. This product is meeting 25% of
the current Indian market needs and is being used in
75 centres all over India.
The
commercial success of these technologies has brought
in monetary returns and societal benefits. Apart from
the direct savings in foreign exchange, the lower
price of these competitive indigenous products has in
every instance, helped to keep down the price of the
imported counterparts. The commercial success of these
technologies has also fostered an increased
participation.
BMT
Wing holds 47 patents which have been granted and 46
patent applications are under various stages of
processing. The Institute also holds 13 design
registrations on its products. |
Technology Proving
Facility
|
 |
The
Technology Proving Facility at the BMT Wing was set up
for scaling up and transfer of medical device
technologies. This unique facility provides the
industrial partner with opportunity to address the
problems of scale up, in production, market seeding
the product as well as training the manpower for
setting up and running the commercial plant. The
facility has class 100 and class 10000 clean areas,
process equipments, packaging and sterilization
systems required for the pilot production of medical
devices. The smooth, fast and successful transfer of
the technologies for oxygenator, hydrocephalus shunt,
artificial heart valve and the needle electrodes is a
testimony to the success of the concept of TECHNOLOGY
PROVING. |
Testing Services
The
BMT Wing offers its services to the medical device
industry and other Institutions in the area of testing and
evaluation of medical devices and biomaterials. About 20

following areas.
The testing services offered
are in great demand by medical device industry both within
and outside the country. The BMT wing also offers
preclinical evaluation of medical devices for regulatory
submission as GLP based studies.
Research & Development
Activities
Apart from product
development, the Wing also engages in advanced research
and development in the following areas.
-
Controlled drug delivery for
targeted delivery of drugs and vaccines
-
Diagnostic kits for
cardiovascular, neurological and genetic diseases
-
Surface modification for
improved blood / tissue compatibility and infection
resistance
-
Polymer composites for various
medical applications
-
Development of bioactive
ceramics materials for use in orthopedic surgery
-
Development of blood handling
devices like centrifugal blood pumps and blood
concentrators
Work in the frontier area of
Tissue Engineering has been initiated with projects for
replacements for small diameter arteries and acute liver
support.
International linkages
Linkages have been developed with international groups
working in this area through various exchange programmes
supported by the British Council, JSPS of Japan and the
DST-DAAD (Indo-German). International collaborative
projects from agencies like the Indo-French Centre for
Promotion of Advanced Research have been successfully
carried out.
Linkages with Industry
The Institute has strong
partnership with Industry in both
Various innovative modes of
interaction is possible with industry for sponsored R&D,
joint R&D and also product evaluation and testing.
Future
The total requirements of
medical devices and biomaterials in India is estimated at
Rs.7000 crores per year. About 80% of these are met by
imports from developed countries. The Institute has
planned to considerably expand its current R&D activities
testing services and industrial support so that it become
a nodal agency and catalyst for Knowledge Based Growth of
this industry.
