Medica 2003:

Record number CBI-supported companies and products

The record number of 26 companies exhibit in the CBI pavilion during Medica 2003. The companies have been carefully selected by CBI, Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries. Products from these companies have to conform to the high quality requirements of European directives and demands. Consequently, CBI only gives them the ‘green light’ for import into Europe when those stringent requirements have been met.

Products from 6 countries

The participants chosen by CBI represent both large and medium-sized companies. Most of them have already been able to demonstrate that their products are equal to those from established producing countries. Guidance by CBI gives the slightly smaller companies an opportunity to display their products too. Assistance rendered by CBI covers all aspects of marketing, right down to administrative procedures for legislation and demands, as well as – where necessary – appropriate graining for staff members. The range of products on display includes custom-made instruments and ready-to-use disposable sets/kits. Companies present represent Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, South Africa and Tunisia.

More and always better

By implementing its objective – well expressed in its name – the goods which CBI helps to introduce to the European market consist of products which all have a sound chance of commercial success. Peter van Gilst, CBI’s programme manager for Medica 2003 is enthusiastic about the offers from these 26 manufacturers. "We have never before been able to invite so many manufacturers and this is the fires-ever trade fair of its kind when there has been such a wide range of medical products in our pavilions. Every year witness an expanding supply of good products accessible for the European market, originating in the developing countries which CBI covers. More important is the fact that increasing numbers of these products are marketed in Europe. I have to tell you, from my own experience, that it’s been an uphill battle, but in the meantime a great many imports and end-users have found – to their advantage – what it is like to trade with these countries. The producers in developing countries had a lot of leeway to make up. Now, slowly but surely, they have overcome that and, even stronger, they are highly motivated to do better with their products than comparable products from other sources."

Van Gilst quotes the example of products made of ever-lighter materials, which have found their way into operating theatres.

In its capacity as an agency of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CBI has another task. Thanks to its in-depth knowledge on manufacturers, their products and production processes, CBI increasingly acts as intermediary between European importers and the producers in developing countries.
