Convinced that the
cluster model of development of SMEs in Italy is very relevant to India,
the Indo-Italian Chamber has launched several initiatives to bring
clusters from Italy into relationship with corresponding clusters in
India. This strategy consists in
bringing the technical capabilities and know-how of the Italian clusters
to the clusters in India, which can be upgraded and made internationally
competitive through an exchange of technology and personnel.
One of the Chamber’s
recent forays has been into the medical device sector. Thus, the
Indo-Italian Chamber has taken the initiative to bring the medical devices
clusters in Gujarat and Modena
together and to explore the great potential for industrial and commercial
collaboration in this area between the two countries. An MOU on
cluster-to-cluster development was signed by Modena and Gujarat.
As part of this
initiative during the HOSPIMEDICA INDIA 2001, the Chamber tied up with the
National Biomedical Engineering Society, Medical Disposables Manufacturers
Association, Medical Plastics Data Service, Popular Plastics and Packaging
and UNIDO to organise a conference on Medical Derive Technology in
February 2001.
The representative of the
Italian consortium for bio-medical devices participated in the conference
and visited Gujarat, where he met with representatives of medical
associations and companies. He also visited hospitals in Mumbai to see at
first hand the existing technologies and equipment available in India.
As a follow-up to this
visit and conference, the Indo-Italian Chamber jointly with the Medical
Plastics Data Service (MPDS) is preparing a report on the Italian Medical
Device sector which will bridge the information gap on the status of this
sector in Italy and will serve as a handbook for the Indian medical device
companies, enabling them to explore avenues for trade and collaboration
with Italy.
As part of this new
experiment in bringing the clusters of Italy and India together, the
Chamber is also mounting a medical mission to Italy from November 26-29,
2001, to help the Indian industry to understand the capabilities and the
technological developments in the medical device clusters in Italy and to
explore possibilities for joint collaboration.
To promote meaningful
bilateral relations with Italy in this sector, our Chamber has also joined
hands with the Medical Plastics Data Service (MPDS) to bring out a monthly
publication on the subject. We are thus pleased to launch the September
issue, which is the first issue in the series. The next issue will carry
the special report prepared by the Chamber on this sector in Italy.
The Into Italian Chamber
would like the readers of this newsletter that it will jointly with MPDS
provide all assistance required by the Indian and Italian medical device
companies to promote their business interests, through an interchange
between the clusters.
We do hope that many of
you who read this issue will join us on this delegation. We also hope this
newsletter will benefit the industry both in India and Italy.
